Self Awareness

What does self-awareness mean?

Self-awareness is the ability to understand you are not your thoughts, feelings, or ideas.  If you are not those things, what are you?  You are the soul that can objectively see yourself outside of yourself.  In other words, having a strong understanding of who you are and being able to respond to situations objectively rather than emotionally.  This takes some practice.  Self-awareness in this lifetime, opens us up to experience the world differently.  How?  The more objective you can respond to situations, the more constructive the outcome.  For example, you are on a date with your significant other, and they say something that triggers you.  You now have some choices on how you can respond.  You can take it personal and react emotionally (starting an argument) or you can remove your thoughts, emotions, and ideas around the comment and respond objectively.  Allowing yourself that time to reflect and become objective with yourself will ultimately reward you immensely.  I am not implying you will never become triggered or react emotionally.  What I am saying is the more you practice awareness within yourself, the less reactive you become.  The pressure is off you to react; you can see the situation and person for all that it is and respond from a place of love and compassion.  This is a beautiful tool to have when entering any relationship with self.  I know for me practicing self-awareness helped free me from my emotions.  I can feel them in all their glory, allowing them to pass through me and/or ebb and flow.  I am no longer a slave to my emotions.  I understand emotions are not who we are, they are simply things we feel.  Emotions will always exist, and we can allow them to ebb and flow.

How do I know if I am being self-aware?

You will know you are practicing self-awareness when you realize you do not become as triggered by words or actions from people around you.  Ask yourself each evening how many times you reacted or became triggered by something that day?  What could you have done differently?  Is there room for improvement?  Looking back on a situation and asking yourself if there are ways you can improve, is a level of self-awareness.  When you practice self-awareness, you can be honest with yourself.  Having honest conversations with yourself can reduce making excuse, defensiveness, controlling tendencies, and being hurtful to others.  Practicing self-awareness helps you to act/respond from a place of love, rather than fear or hate.

How can self-awareness benefit me?

Self-awareness helps you understand yourself and how you relate to others.  Self-awareness helps you take responsibility and accountability for your own thoughts, feelings, and actions.  Practicing self-awareness will allow you the freedom to be yourself and understand that it is ok to be exactly where you are.  Self-awareness helps you see yourself from an objective viewpoint.  Having an objective point of view allows you to understand that emotions do not need to dictate how you respond or act.  This helps reduce conflicts in your life, ensures honesty within yourself, and helps you to gentle on yourself when difficult situations arise.  Over time, you will begin to see the profound impact practicing self-awareness has on you and others in your life.  Self-awareness helps you to rediscover the parts of you that need healing.  Healing these parts will ensure a more cohesive relationship with yourself.  A more cohesive relationship with yourself will undoubtedly create more cohesive relationships with others.

Self-awareness can simplify your life by allowing you to be less affected by miscommunications, unwanted behaviors, and unwanted situations that arise in life.  Isn’t it our responsibility to know ourselves best anyway?
